Anonymous hackers claim to have the data of 800 Million Cards, True?

A group calling itself ‘Anonymous Ukraine’ has claimed that it has hacked information related to more than 800 million US credit and debit cards including of those who are at highest seats in the US government and other politicians. A claim that has been doubted by experts both on its merit and enormity. The group’s main reason to do so seems to be to damage relations between US and Ukraine and is believed to be a Russian group. A message from the group stated the following on 24th of March:

“After the USA showed its true face when she unilaterally decides which of the peoples to live independently and who under the yoke of the Federal Reserve, we decided to show the world who is behind the future collapse of the American banking system. We own all the financial information of the Fed. And even more than you think.”

There are two companies, Risk Based Security and Battelle, which are investigating the breach and both say that they have not found any credible proof that the said 800 million accounts have bean breached. The data that hackers have provided as proof is incomplete, outdated and/or fraudulent.
The hacking group announced that it had released details of more than 25 million credit or debit cards. Battelle counted the right amount to be about 10.2 million and only 1% of it is complete. Rest of the accounts have either important details missing, such as full name or expiry date or validation codes, or the information is totally out dated as the expiration dates are from 2012-2014 rather than 2015-2016. The earlier dates of expiration suggests that the information was acquired from an older data dump. For all those credit or debit cards having all the correct and complete information, are believed to be gathered through fake banking websites using phishing, according to Ernest Hampson, technical director for Battelle’s cyber intelligence and counterintelligence group. He added about the threat and sophistication:

“These criminal organizations are acting more like armies every day. They have their own Intel, they’re gathering information about your employees, finding out who your friends are, and they can target attacks directly against you that make it unlikely that you would not click on that email.”
Interestingly, it seems that some of the users started noticing something fishy about these phishing sites and started entering messages like “Bite Me”, “your momma” or “get lost”.

While downloading the data from site, Battelle’s investigators also received a malware which appeared to have been hosted in Ukraine on a server owned by a Ukrainian. The investigators are closely monitoring the activities of Anonymous Ukraine. Hampson said:

“It’s really important to keep an eye on your enemy, find out what they’re interested in, what their motivation is, what their capabilities are.”

Anonymous Philippines defaced Govt. websites for protest against Anti-CyberCrime Law

In the year 1987 when the late former President Corazon Aquino passed the bill
that gave the Filipino people its right to freedom of speech and expression
but in the year 2012 politicians and lawmakers came up of the bill
that kills the right of the people to freely express their opinion and
freedom of speech through the internet.

The 1987 Constitution, Article III, Bill of Rights, Section 4 states,

"No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press,
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances."

We, the citizens of the internet, fight again for this right and for this freedom.
We fight not only for ourselves but also for others who stand with us against the Cyber Crime Law —
bloggers, gamers or ordinary internet users.

This is our way to express and oppose the bill that may destroy the future of the internet in the Philippines.
We believe that together we shall achieve the goal and the purpose of this cause.
We shall stand and fight for the Filipino Netizens' right to freedom of speech and expression.

Protect our Right to Freedom of Expression!

LinkedIn files a lawsuit to unmask the anonymous hackers

LinkedIn has filled one lawsuit in order to identify the unidentified hackers who created several thousand fake accounts with the aim of scraping the profile data. As per the court documents, those defendants operated automated bots on the virtual computers which were rented from Amazon in order to harvest the details on social networking site for the professionals.
The lawyers for LinkedIn claimed that it cost $5000 to deal with those hackers-they filed one complaint with the Northern District of California Court after discovering the fake accounts.
In the court submission, LinkedIn said that Since May 2013, some unknown entities or persons employing several automated software programs or bots have registered several thousand fake LinkedIn member accounts and therefore they have copied or extracted data from the profile pages of numerous members.
This practice is popularly known as data scraping and it is explicitly barred by the user agreement of LinkedIn that prohibits the access to LinkedIn through spidering, scraping, crawling or by using any other data or technology to access the data without any express written consent of the LinkedIn members or LinkedIn.
Although, till now the identity of the hackers is unknown, as the hackers had used the Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud it, but they are expecting that they would be able to identify those Doe Defendants by serving the third-party discovery on AWS.
While this thing was not clear what these hackers would do with these data, LinkedIn mentioned that irreparable and ongoing harm had caused. As per the complaint of LinkedIn, having several thousands of false profiles decreases the integrity and the accuracy of information on this website, causing possibly the legitimate users to become misled or confused.
LinkedIn said that the mission of this site is to connect the professionals of this world to make them more successful and productive. Therefore this company hosted the CVs of around 259 million members and a number of them are high-level executives.
Recruiters of the 90 of the Fortune 100 companies utilize the website to look for the prospective candidates.
Mike Small-the security analyst at Kuppinger Cole mentioned that the cloud services are quite cheap to build up, very powerful and quite easy to use. They mainly need one credit card to get the access. These features are quite attractive to the cyber criminals and hackers like as to the legitimate users.
The cloud services mainly have some extensive control in the place in order to prevent the use for the illegal or the illegitimate purposes and the cloud service that deals normally, forbid this particularly. The cyber criminals would require searching the way to cloak the identity while utilizing the public cloud service in this way.
This incident demonstrates all the difficulties faced in the world where both law and the law enforcement is organized geographically but the criminal activities that use the Internet cut across the boundaries.
LinkedIn spokesman, Mr. Richard George uttered that they are a members-first organization and they feel that they have the responsibility to protect that control that their members have more than the information that they use on LinkedIn.

Anonymous Philippines Defaced Several Government Websites for Protest

Greetings citizens of the Philippines. We are Anonymous.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but this is the only easiest way we could convey our message to you,
our dear brothers and sisters who are tired of this cruelty and this false democracy, tired of this government
and the politicians who only think about themselves.

The government, in many ways, has failed its Filipino citizens.
We have been deprived of things which they have promised to give; what our late heroes have promised us to give.
Let us remind the government that fairness, justice and freedom are more than words. They are perspectives.

A march is happening, a revolution. A way to speak, a way to be heard.
On the fifth day of November, 2013, we will try to be a part of the history.

But of course there are those who do not want us to speak, and those who have doubts.
You can sleep, sit, go on with your everyday routine just like a herd of sheep and watch as the government laugh at you.
But if you see what we see, if you feel as we feel, and if you would seek as we seek... then we ask you to stand beside us,
this fifth of November outside the gates of Supreme Court and let us march our way to freedom - a freedom from the shackles
of the Government.

You have been called; and by watching, you have been chosen.

To the "incorrupt" officials of the government, we are challenging you!
Join us!

The Corrupt - Fear us.
The Honest - Support us.
The Heroic - Join us.

We are Anonymous.
We are ONE.
The government, you are NONE.

We are legion.
On the 5th of November, Government - Hear and understand us, or EXPECT US!

Several Philippines Govt. websites hacked & defaced by Anonymous on the eve of “Million People March.”

MANILA, Philippines — The Latest News is coming from the Anonymous Headlines that anons hack several Philippines govt websites on the eve of the “Million People March.”

They hacked Official websites of:

As we above said that this is done before Monday’s protest action against the public call a corruption-ridden pork barrel system.
According to protest organizers, the August 26 Luneta rally can be partly compared with the social media-spawned Arab Spring that spread information and unified motivations via digital protest.

Anonymous wrote on the defaced webpage:
We Appreciate the fact that you have now responded to the public clamor to abolish the PDAF
However, the alternative package of still allowing the Congressmen and Senators to
identify sponsored projects to be funded, albeit as line items in the annual budget,
continues to leave MONEY with grasp of conniving and corrupt public officials.
In effect, this merely shifted the timeframe upon when these projects are identified and approved.
Therefore, the PORK BARREL REMAINS!
Ending the message with: “We Pursue our call for you to complete Abolish the Pork barrel system let our legislator just legislate.”

Amazon Fired Steubenville Hacker because he is Anonymous

The man who claimed responsibility for the leaks that drew national attention to the Steubenville rape case now says Amazon.com recently fired him because of his association with the loosely-affiliated network of “hacktivists” known as Anonymous.

Deric Lostutter, 26, told The Huffington Post that he began his job at a new Amazon call center in Winchester, Ky., earlier this month, but was fired after his supervisors discovered his home had been raided by the FBI in connection with the Steubenville case.

“They pulled out a list of online articles and asked for my side of the story, then escorted me off the property stating that even though i havnt [sic] been charged, i could no longer work there because it made them feel uncomfortable that i have a political affiliation with anonymous,” Lostutter told HuffPost in a text message.

Lostutter said he was told not to come back to work after his first day on the job and officially fired several days later.

Amazon did not return several requests for comment. Lostutter sent HuffPost a picture of his Amazon insurance card as a verification of employment.

Employers in Kentucky can hire and fire people as they like, as long as that reason isn't an illegal one (like racial or religious discrimination). Lostutter's legal options are limited, said Kurt Scharfenberger, a Louisville, Ky.-based attorney who specializes in labor law.

“If it’s alleged you’ve done some sort of misdeed, your employer may suspend or fire you,” Scharfenberger said. “It’s certainly not fair, but it is legal.”

“Unfortunately the law is pretty narrow when it comes to termination,” he added.

Lostutter, who also goes by the screen name KYAnonymous, took credit in an interview with HuffPost for leaking "all the photos that the players had already posted then erased" in the Steubenville High School rape case, where two football players were ultimately found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl. A photo of the players carrying the victim while she was passed out, along with a video that showed a former Steubenville baseball player making jokes about raping a “dead” girl, helped draw widespread attention to the case and sparked outrage across the country. Lostutter said he had a hand in leaking the infamous video as well.

"The tweets, screenshots, Instagrams ... Pretty much everything you've seen in the media, that came through me," Lostutter told HuffPost in June. However, he noted, any images that went public were sent to him, and not the product of hacking.

FBI agents -- guns drawn -- raided Lostutter’s home in April. Agents took his laptop, flash drives, an external hard drive and two mobile phones, among other things.

According to Gawker’s Adrian Chen, the FBI targeted Lostutter in connection with the December 2012 hack of RollRedRoll.com, the fan site of the Steubenville High School football team, and the email account of its webmaster, James Parks. After the site was hacked, a video of Lostutter -- wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and threatening to disclose personal information of Steubenville football players if they didn’t apologize to the victim -- appeared on the website.

Although Lostutter gloated about the website hack during an interview with Chen -- but later asked Chen not to include that comment in his story -- he maintains he didn’t hack the site or email account. According to a report in The Herald Star, a man in Virginia Beach, Va., identified as BatCat, claimed responsibility for the hack.

Tor Ekeland, Lostutter’s lawyer who's representing him in the FBI investigation, told HuffPost that although there is a U.S. attorney assigned to his case in connection with the Steubenville fan site hacking, there is no indictment against Lostutter.

As for his firing from Amazon, Lostutter's next steps are unclear. He told HuffPost he started a new job on Friday, describing it only as an "IT consultant."

But it's not difficult to see why a company like Amazon, which handles sensitive customer information like credit card numbers and addresses and has a robust cloud computing business, might be hesitant to employ someone whose home was raided by the FBI in connection with hacking.

Lostutter said that he passed a drug test and background check before he was hired by Amazon, but it appears that the company didn't do a simple Google search before it brought him on. The FBI raid was covered extensively online.

"It’s not like I want anything from Amazon," Lostutter told HuffPost. "But I want to make it known that discrimination won’t be tolerated. We have rights just like anybody else has," he said, referring to members of Anonymous. "We’re not Al Qaeda. We’re not trying to destroy America and the American people. We’re the 99 percent.”

FBI's claim that it dismantled Anonymous met with a massive data leak

The FBI has its collective foot in its mouth right about now.

On Wednesday, Austin P. Berglas, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s cyber division, gave an interview in which he boasted that the 2012 arrests of LulzSec members had "destroyed" the leadership of Anonymous, rendering it effectively neutralized.

He told the Huffington Post, "The movement is still there, and they're still yacking on Twitter and posting things, but you don't hear about these guys coming forward with those large breaches. It's just not happening, and that's because of the dismantlement of the largest players."

You can guess what happened next.

OpLastResort, the operation formerly dubbed OpAngel, and aimed at striking back at the government forces that drove Aaron Swartz to suicide, sprang back to life.

As the Global Post reported Wednesday night, OpLastResort began tweeting out links to an apparently hacked restaurant site, TheFederalGrill, uploading vast amounts of data apparently taken directly from FBI servers. Then they issued a challenge to readers and reporters:

(Actually that last one is almost certainly the old "take credit for the heck of it” trick. It might just fool some of the people, some of the time.)

Nonetheless, they do seem to have accessed FBI servers with recent data from the Regional Forensics Computer Laboratory (RFCL), and to have posted it as hidden PDF files and pages on the hacked site. The most recent data is from January of this year, although much is from last year. When asked on Twitter why that site, OpLastResort said there could be no better place to grill the Feds than the (apparently long-closed) Federal Grill. Because they are uploaded as PDFs rather than Web pages, they must be downloaded to be viewed, and one might hesitate before downloading hacked FBI files from Anonymous hosted on hacked websites.

If one were more cautious than a reporter, that is.

The documents include, for example, slides from a presentation in Orange County that includes the numbers of cases handled in the lab, the referring law enforcement agencies, resolutions, etc.

The hacktivists have a point: Clearly the arrests of LulzSec and AntiSec members, and the exposure of leader Sabu as an FBI collaborator, have not destroyed Anonymous. Rather, the arrests have instead taught them hard lessons about IP anonymizing and VPNs, about basic opsec strategies like not tweeting out successful hacks under the same username you used to make the hack in the first place, and about the risks of separation from the Hive. Remember, it was frustration with the anonymity and long lead times of Anonymous itself that led LulzSec, CabinCr3w, and other crews to break away from the collective.

Interestingly, a persistent rumor seems to indicate that this latest action may be the work of Sabu himself, perhaps contrite for the years of prison time his crew are currently serving or facing. One file released by OpLastResort is titled "When Sabu Met Michelle" and contains the apparent email for Michelle Obama, on whom Sabu had a very public crush.

We contacted three well-placed sources in Anonymous who confirmed the rumor, and one was willing to speak on the record. S/he told us that s/he and others believe, “It was too big and quick of project to not be Feds and bears Sabu signatures.” In other words, there’s no way a hack could have been organized and gotten to the heart of the FBI in only five or so hours. The files had to have been gathered previously, and just lain unused.

"He definitely has the same Lulz 9000 rhetoric. He's not stupid, but the most charitable info is that he's done all this under duress. OpLastResort is on about the capability of creating a fuckton of soiled underwear; producing a single really shit-disturbing document would ease a lot of minds.”

So the FBI presumably allowed him to have and leak the files, which are not tremendously damaging except in a propaganda sense. The most recent, after all, dates to January of this year. The $64,000 question is why.

Sabu’s sentencing for his role in LulzSec has been pushed back repeatedly because of his “continued cooperation”; the most recent delayed date was this morning. After Sabu's outing as a collaborator, it emerged that one reason he could seemingly take the FBI website down at will was that he had the FBI's cooperation. Perhaps they now wish they'd asked for their keys back.

Certainly the self-aware and humorous tone is similar in the tweets.

You don't hear quite so much about finite hacking crews or leaders anymore, because they have learned the hard way that the minute you take credit, you also draw fire—and the FBI has pretty good aim. But Anonymous dismantled? Not so fast.

FBI cyber team claims victory over Anonymous

The notorious hacktivist group Anonymous has been essentially neutralized according to the FBI, which cited a series of arrests as putting a damper on the group’s influence.

The FBI believes that the identification and subsequent arrests last year of five members of “Lulz Security” - described as a powerful player within the largely amorphous Anonymous collective - have acted as a “huge deterrent effect,” according to Austin P. Berglas, the assistant special agent in charge of the bureau’s cyber division in New York.

All five members of Lulz Security, which was at least at the time considered one of the most legitimate threats within the Anonymous community, have pled guilty.

LulzSec had at the time claimed responsibility for attacks against Sony Pictures as well as Fox’s “X-Factor” reality TV series. Along with LulzSec, the FBI also arrested a sixth individual at that time that operated with another group, Antisec.

“All of these guys were major players in the Anonymous movement, and a lot of people looked to them just because of what they did,” Berglas said in an interview with the Huffington Post.

In 2012, an informant known in cyber circles as “Sabu,” or Hector Monsegur, began to cooperate with the FBI following his arrest. According to Berglas, that action and the arrests that followed led to an “added layer of distrust” within Anonymous.

"The movement is still there, and they're still yacking on Twitter and posting things, but you don't hear about these guys coming forward with those large breaches," he said. "It's just not happening, and that's because of the dismantlement of the largest players."

Indeed, a brief search through Twitter and Facebook will yield a plethora of active Anonymous groups, many of which have now evolved into other roles such as de-facto newswires which also promote online activism on behalf of a broad list of causes.

According to the FBI, its arrests last year have directly led to a decrease in high-profile cyber attacks. That news is in contrast to the group’s heyday in 2010, when Anonymous carried out a number of attacks against US companies, banks, and government agencies, employing sophisticated denial-of-service tools and defacing websites.

The cyber division of the FBI is divided into five teams of investigators. One entire unit is focused on obtaining digital evidence from cell phones, cameras, computers, and tablets in order to support a wide range of investigations including organized crime, computer hacking, and child pornography, the Huffington Post reported.

Berglas said his investigators have become very adept at breaking encryption methods used to protect computer files.

Sabu’s capture, for example, was said to be made possible when he inadvertently left his IP address exposed - a seemingly elementary mistake for anyone with significant ties to groups like AntiSec or LulzSec. That mistake allowed federal investigators to track down his location in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
